The Kaiyuan bow is a marquee member of the Dashao or Large-Ear bow (大稍弓) genre of Ming Dynasty (1368--1644 AD) bow design. Its defining characteristics are its deep brace height, sharply double-bent ears, and flared string notch. This is a smooth and stable design that enjoys hurling medium-heavy arrows (in the 10.5--11.5 grains-per-pound range).
